Giants vs. Cowboys: Preview, predictions, what to watch for

Sometimes you get a hunch, and isn’t it about time the Giants put together a truly solid game? They are healthier than they’ve been all season, at home and should be more competitive on defense after the additions of Leonard Williams and Deone Bucannon. Can they prevent the Cowboys from putting 30 on the board and protect Daniel Jones to allow him to find all his targets?

Marquee Matchup
Cowboys WRs Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup vs. Giants CBs Janoris Jenkins and DeAndre Baker
This was a knockout victory for the Cowboys in the season opener, with Gallup (7-158) having a career game and Cooper (6-106, one TD) doing plenty of damage. Huge chunk plays in the passing game destroyed the Giants. Since then, Baker has stabilized his rookie season — making far fewer mental mistakes while increasing his aggressiveness, though his game still is not where it needs to be. Jenkins is second in the league (to Devin McCourty of the Patriots) with four interceptions. Cooper has five touchdown catches and is averaging 16.3 yards per reception. Gallup is averaging 15.6. Play deep, and then deeper against these guys.

4 Downs
Fighting Words: If the words did not come tumbling out of the mouth of mouthy DeMarcus Lawrence, they might have flown under the radar. Lawrence is proud of the nickname he gave Daniel Jones — “another little Manning.’’ Though Lawrence went on to say “Eli is probably a soon-to-be Hall of Famer’’ there is always some sarcasm-laced derision when Lawrence talks about Eli Manning. In nine career games against the Giants, Lawrence has four sacks of Manning, so it is not as if he has been a game-wrecker. After posting 25 sacks the past two years, Lawrence cashed in with a five-year, $105 million contract extension prior to this season, but has just 3.5 sacks in seven games this year.

Gang’s Not All Here: The shocking news that Sterling Shepard is back in the concussion protocol means once again, the Giants will not have their four top offensive weapons on the field for Daniel Jones.

Shepard, Saquon Barkley, Golden Tate and Evan Engram have not played one snap together because of suspension (Tate), injury (Barkley and Engram) or multiple concussions (Shepard). This foursome has not played a single snap together this season, wrecking the best-laid plans for that this attack could be after trading away Odell Beckham Jr.

Dak Attack: The initial one-word response from Giants coach Pat Shurmur was appropriate: “Ouch.’’ Dak Prescott absolutely owns the Giants. In the past three games, he has nine touchdown passes against the Giants. In his career, he has thrown 14 scoring passes on his favorite defense to shred. He threw for a career-high 405 yards and four TDs in the season opener.

“I think he’s had success against other teams, as well,’’ Shurmur said. “But just from our standpoint, we need to get it fixed.’’

Overall, Prescott has no interceptions in his previous 183 pass attempts against the Giants, dating to 2016.

Match game: There are good matchups and bad matchups, and consider this one very bad for the Giants. Their defense allows opposing quarterbacks to throw for 9.15 yards-per-pass, the highest figure in the league. The Cowboys have 28 pass plays of 20 or more yards this season, converting six of them into touchdowns (fourth in the league). The Giants have allowed seven big-play passing touchdowns (20 or more yards), third-most in the league.

Monday Night Football: Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers Prediction and Preview

The NFL's "Black and Blue" division takes center stage in the Week 6 edition of "Monday Night Football." The Green Bay Packers host the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field with first-place implications in the NFC North Division at stake. A win for the Packers (4-1) gives them a stranglehold on the division, while a win for the Lions (2-1-1) would put them ahead by percentage points. The Lions have swept the Packers in each of the last two seasons.

Getting their first win in this series since 2016 won't be easy for the Packers. But they are eager to prove that the loss to Philadelphia last week was just a blip on the radar. As for the Lions, this is a must-win game for them as they are looking to return to the postseason. Both teams, however, come into this game with injury concerns.

Three Things to Watch

1. Injury concerns on offense

Both teams are banged up on this side of the ball. The Packers are expecting to be without wide receiver Davante Adams (turf toe) again, which will be a huge blow to this offense. He is the team's leading pass catcher with 25 catches for 378 yards, and he's averaging 15 yards per reception. The team's second-leading receiver, Marquez Valdes-Scantling (17 receptions, 235 yards, 1 TD), is questionable with calf and hamstring injuries.

If both men are unable to go, then look for Aaron Rodgers to give more looks to tight end Jimmy Graham (12, 132, 2), and the team's No. 3 receiver, Geronimo Allison (10, 104, 2). They may also have to lean more on running back Aaron Jones (78 carries, 302 yards, 8 TDs). Rodgers continues to be lights out from the pocket, as he's completing 62 percent of his passes for 1,307 yards and six touchdowns. The Packers are averaging close to 25 points per game.

For the Lions, it's rookie tight end T.J. Hockenson (concussion) and wide receiver Danny Amendola (chest) who are listed as questionable. If both men are unable to go, then the Lions will lose a combined 22 receptions for 307 yards and three scores. If that's the case, then Matthew Stafford (62.4 completion percentage, 1,122 yards, 9 TDs) will throw extra passes to receivers Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones Jr., who have combined for 37 catches for 520 yards and five touchdowns. Running back Kerryon Johnson (74 carries, 251 yards, 1 TD) had his first 100-yard game of the season last week against Kansas City. If the Lions are shorthanded in the passing game, then they may need Johnson to reach the century mark again.

2. Defense could decide the game

The Packers are eighth in the league in points allowed per game (18.6), they're tied for sixth in sacks (15), and they're second in interceptions (7). And while the Lions are giving up over 400 yards per game, they have been able to generate a pass rush at times (9 sacks), and they're able to occasionally force turnovers (8 takeaways). This game may come down to a big stop in the end.

3. By the numbers

The Lions may currently own a four-game winning streak over the Packers, but since 2010 the Packers own a 10-8 series lead, with five of those wins coming at home. Before this current streak, the Lions hadn't swept the Packers since 1988.

Final Analysis

Even with the injuries, the Packers still have more firepower than the Lions do, and they have a better defense. It'll be a close game, but Green Bay will find a way to break this losing streak against Detroit.

Prediction: Packers 27, Lions 24

Three keys and prediction: Bears vs. Redskins

1. Don’t let it come down to a kick.
Eddy Pineiro’s surprise inclusion on Saturday’s injury report, and official “questionable” status, does leave open the possibility the Bears don’t have a kicker on Monday night. Matt Nagy sounded optimistic about Pineiro’s injury being "minor" and having him available at FedEx Field, but the best thing the Bears can do is make sure they don’t desperately need their kicker to win (as they did last week).

Maybe Pineiro plays, maybe he doesn’t. But this is more of a general key: The Bears need roster talent advantage to take over on Monday night. Pineiro proved he can make the big kick last week, but if he’s at all banged up, it would be best to make sure he doesn’t need to make a kick to win at the end.

2. Hit intermediate throws and downfield shots.
The Bears’ offensive line righted itself last week in Denver after a rough beginning of the season, and should provide ample time for Mitch Trubisky to push the ball downfield. Washington only has two sacks and 20 total pressures this year, and doesn’t have the talent in its secondary — even with big names like Josh Norman and Landon Collins — to make plays downfield.

To wit:
Carson Wentz completed six of eight intermediate throws (traveling 10-20 yards beyond the line of scrimmage) and threw two touchdowns on passes traveling 20 yards or more beyond the line of scrimmage. A week later, Dak Prescott completed all six of his intermediate throws and hucked a touchdown on a deep ball.

Prescott and Wentz have, of course, looked much better than Trubisky over the first two weeks of the season. But at the very least, the opportunities for Trubisky to push the ball downfield should be there. The 2017 No. 2 overall pick needs to take advantage of those openings when they present themselves.

Succeeding here will require a good run-pass balance, though, because while Washington hasn’t got much out of their pass rush it does feature four former first-round picks (Ryan Kerrigan, Montez Sweat, Daron Payne, Jonathan Allen — provided Allen plays) who can still get after a quarterback if a passing play becomes obvious.

3. Don’t get beat on play action.
While Washington has one of the NFL’s worst rushing offenses (ranking 30th in yards per rush and rushing yards per game), Case Keenum has been one of the NFL’s most effective quarterbacks when using play action. Rookie receiver Terry McLaurin is a legitimate deep threat of whom Eddie Jackson and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix will need to be aware.

But the Bears’ defense is outstanding, and should be able to generate pressure on Keenum against an offensive line missing holdout left tackle Trent Williams. That could help keep a lid on Washington's offense, which ranks fifth in DVOA, just as effectively as Jackson and Clinton-Dix could.

Prediction:
Bears 20, Redskins 17. For those hoping Monday night will be the breakout game for the Bears’ offense, they’ll still be waiting. Washington’s defense isn’t very good, and the crowd atmosphere at FedEx Field won’t intimidate anyone on the Bears’ sideline. But this is still a road game, and the Bears only won one road game by more than a touchdown in 2018 (against a Buffalo Bills team quarterbacked by Nathan Peterman).

The expectation, though, is for the Bears’ offense to be better than it was in Weeks 1 and 2. That may not lead to a 2018-Week-4 level of explosion, but merely getting to 20 points would represent progress for this offense. What’ll be key, though: The Bears’ defense will force multiple takeaways, offsetting a handful of big plays made by Case Keenum and helping secure a narrow victory in Maryland.
